Microsoft Ends Business Premium Grants for Nonprofits

Starting next month, Microsoft will discontinue the grants for Microsoft 365 Business Premium licenses it offered to nonprofits.

This news follows the company’s price increases on all Microsoft 365 licenses earlier this year and, more recently, increases on its on-premises servers.

While we understand this may have a financial impact on our nonprofit clients, Microsoft will continue to offer other deals.

Let’s break down the details, including when the discontinuation begins and what alternatives nonprofits can consider.

Important Dates and Details

• Start date: Beginning July 1, nonprofits will no longer receive 10 free Business Premium licenses.
• Renewal timing: If your renewal date falls before July 1, 2025, you still will have those 10 free licenses until your next renewal date in 2026. If your renewal date falls on or after July 1, you will be affected.

Microsoft Offers Alternative Deals

Microsoft still offers a couple of deals for nonprofits to take advantage of:

• A 75% discount on many Microsoft 365 licenses, including Business Premium.
• Up to 300 free Business Basic licenses.

A Business Premium license costs $23.10 per user, per month. So, at a 75% discount, you’re looking at paying less than six dollars (~$5.77) per user, per month.

Business Basic doesn’t have the security features that come with Business Premium, but it includes email and online versions of Office apps like Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

It’s great for small organizations or startups that just need Office basics without desktop apps. If your nonprofit has seasonal workers or volunteers, Business Basic is a perfect license.
